- arcstarter ghetto-diy pageThis is an arcstarter, but it is not an arcstabilizer perse- to get that you need constant HV RF. Still, it seems to be the best and easiest way to create such a device. I have tried making an equivalent device using several parts from a broken monitor, including the yoke and flyback transformer. The yoke and a power-factor correction inductor that i salvaged from the input stage of the monitor got hot - the small inductor very much so! when I have them a 2-turn primary that was hooked to a mosfet. The mosfet was driven at a variable frequency using a emmitter-follower current amplifier from a frequency generator. Though the permiable material got hot, due to the small number of secondary coils insufficient secondary voltage was generated. The breakdown voltage of air does not decrease much with increasing frequency. An alternative would be to directly couple the output of the flyback transformer, which is a few thousand volts at about 1.2Mhz directly to the welding gun. This would produce a nice, well maintained arc, but blocking the hv/hf from the current supply would most likely require a resonant LC. To maintain the high voltage across the inductor here the circuit would have to be very high Q, in which case it might as well be the secondary of a transformer. I conclude from these musings that the best thing would be to do exactly what arcstarter did, except with the monitot flyback fo HV excitation. hence a HV cap must be procured.

it is useful to convert a post-script file to SVG for presentation on the web. for example, you can export matlab figures to eps then to SVG for high-resolution viewing on the web. (note: images do not transfer from EPS to SVG - save as a jpg or png if the figure will contain a bitmap, ie. from image() opengl, patch etc.) to convert:
- use the pstoedit utility to convert to a not-quite usable SVG file. the command is: pstoedit -f svg test.eps test.svg
- add in xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" to the <svg ... > root element. this will get it to render in firefox. you can remove the root width and height if desired.
- remove the first <clipPath <path ...> >
- remove the <g ...> tag that referenced the clip path, as well as the corresponding closing </g>
- add transform="translate(-16.82751,-180.5219)"> to the first <g ..> tag.
- remove all text-rendering:optimizeGeometricPrecision;
- change all font-size:XX to font-size:XXpx
- done!

- Boost.Spirit - 'an object oriented recursive descent parser implemented using template meta-programming'. Despite all the buzz words, it seems really simple to use, and the program design seems appealingly logical. This would probably be the best way of embedding a parser into C++ code - if, for example, I decide on making the wild and crazy DirectX text display utility that I have been dreaming of for a while. *ropes store large mutable strings, i.e. in a text editor.
- Ben Okopnik, editor of Linux Gazzete - there are 5 tutorials on perl in there that are well written and full of wit/character. The author is quite the original: he prowls the world in a 38' boat, has a large English vocabulary, and also speaks (at least) Spanish and Russian. website, including blog. I wonder how he connects to the web while at sea?
